Martian geomorphology and its relation to subsurface volatiles

    Get PDF
Martian volatile inventory, planetary climatic and atmospheric evolution, and the interpretation of various remote sensing data were discussed. A number of morphologies that were cited as potential indicators of subsurface volatiles were reviewed. Rampart craters and terrain softening were the focus of more in-depth discussion because of the popular attention they have received and the fact that their areal distributions are by far the most extensive of all the proposed indicators

Cytotoxic T cell recognition of an HIV-1 reverse transcriptase variant peptide incorporating the K103N drug resistance mutation

    Get PDF
During HIV-1 infection, cytotoxic T cell (CTL) responses exert strong selective pressure on the replicating virus population. Here we report evidence for T cell activity against the drug resistant K103N region of viral reverse transcriptase in three HIV-1 infected patients exposed to NNRTI antiretroviral drugs. We further characterize the response in one patient by ELISPOT analysis. A nine amino acid peptide incorporating 103N was recognized by patient T cells whereas the wild type was not. The RT K103N mutation is selected by the NNRTI class of HIV drugs. We hypothesize that, in certain individuals, CTL responses against 103N-containing epitopes may protect against NNRTI drug resistance. Characterizing such responses in the context of HLA subtypes could lead to tailored HIV drug therapy or to the design of therapeutic vaccines

Developing an International Work Integrated Learning (WIL)and Work Placement Resource Directory

    Get PDF
Have you ever looked for resources related to work placements and not known where to find them? This is a challenge that colleagues from around the world face. Most practitioners or researchers know of their national association and sources of funding support but may not be aware of the wider global picture. The use of different terms across the world for broadly similar activities can also be unhelpful. Whilst representing ASET at a meeting of the National Placement Associations in Philadelphia, I volunteered to compile an electronic directory of resources relating to work placements, work-integrated learning and co-operative education. This workshop will discuss: • How the project came about • Where the resources are and how to track them down • Finding a student collaborator • The work carried out so far • Quality control of resources • Organisation of resources • Challenges ahead Participants will be able to: • Become familiar with a range of resource to support their own research or practice • Contribute to the next steps for the projec

An overview of New England's economic performance in 2010

    Get PDF
In the first calendar year following the Great Recession, signs of an economic recovery began to take shape across New England. An improving labor market picture, growth in income, indications of a stabilizing housing market, and booming exports spurred economic growth in the region in 2010. As a result, New England’s overall performance surpassed that of the nation as a whole.Economic conditions - New England

Sequestering CP Violation and GIM-Violation with Warped Extra Dimensions

    Get PDF
We propose a model of spontaneous CP violation to address the strong CP problem in warped extra dimensions that relies on sequestering flavor and CP violation. We assume that brane-localized Higgs Yukawa interactions respect a U(3) flavor symmetry that is broken only by bulk fermion mass and Yukawa terms. All CP violation arises from the vev of a CP-odd scalar field localized in the bulk. To suppress radiative corrections to theta-bar, the doublet quarks in this model are localized on the IR brane. We calculate constraints from flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNCs), precision electroweak measurements, CKM unitarity, and the electric dipole moments in this model and predict theta-bar to be at least about 10^-12.Comment: 38 page
